THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELED

in historic Lewes, Delaware
December 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, 2013

Start your holiday season appliquéing with Elly Sienkiewicz and Emily Martin

Elly will be teaching:

Day 1 - Floral Branches Wreath.  This exquisite block is an eye-catching open wreath - a unifying element in Baltimore Album sets.  This block's design and execution is by someone Elly finds to be one of Baltimore's rarest and recognizably best artists.  Her style is unique.  These blocks look complicated but, once you learn the requisite handful of techniques, they are totally repetitive, making this the perfect "pick up and go portable project"!  Master this block's four so-simple elements in class:  1) Wreath stem, 2) Fused, no applique leaves, finely edge-embroidered, 3) Exquisite stitchery-appliqued and embroidered blossoms, 4) Ink-work, 5) Victorian iron-on ink-engraved banderole, 6) Fine permanent Pigma Pen calligraphic inscription.

Day 3, 4 and 5  - Lovebirds in a Wreath (or your choice of birds).  The antique version pictured (tropical parrots with symbolic roses and buds: red for romantic love, white for eternal love) teaches streamlined techniques: padded, single-layer quilted rose applique - or follow the instructions given for personalizing the design into backyard birds, barn swallows, meadowlarks, cardinals or blue jays, using True Broderie Perse (Persian embroidery) applique.

Lovebirds 2013

Emily will be teaching:

Day 2 - Vintage Tiles Revisited Block 4.  Come join us as we explore a new quilt series called "Vintage Tiles Revisited".  These lovely blocks which feature a center medallion can be made into a queen size bed quilt.  They have a gentle Victorian style to them and soft, muted colors that lend themselves to the Baltimore album look we all love.  Adding a touch of plaid to them gives them a depth.  Block 4 uses a back basting technique you discover how to achieve greater accuracy that is of great benefit when applied to more complex blocks.  While I feel the designer must have loved the lily to have fashioned this beauty, it is one of the blocks that is a gentle step into learning this technique.  Try your hand at using plaids and see why I love them.  The embroidery adds greatly to the look of Block #4 but is a very simple stitch.

Day 3, 4 and 5 - Center Medallion

The center focus of this beautiful quilt is the graceful medallion design we will learn to stitch.  Using subtle shading and subdued colors of fabrics you create the allusion of turning, swaying leaf fronds.  In addition to the center block you will see how to make its surrounding border that will put the final touch to this lovely creation.
